Some people think California goes from San Diego to Eureka. But it doesn’t . California is twice as long as that. California actually goes from Los Cabos all the way to Eureka, almost two thousand miles. The California peninsula is the longest peninsula in the world. And more important, the consciousness, the notion of place, what it means to be a Californian, that exists the whole way from the tip to the top.
The spine of the west, the Sierra, goes all the way down to Sierra la Laguna. This mountain range, its species, its way of life, is a continuum. It is the newest mountain range in the world, where the earth is moving most, and in so doing creating new mountains. And what it is bubbling up is this Notion of California…”More than a state. California is also a state of mind” began the old AAA guide. As Spock would say regarding such a beautiful way to capture the essence of California in such a pedestrian format: “Poetry Captain, non-regulation.”
California transcends national boundaries, and, as such, goes from Eureka in the north all the way down to Cabo San Lucas in the south. From Oregon to Mexico is 800 miles, and from TJ to Cabo is another 760 miles! California is 1560 miles long!
Our dream is to create a notion of California that includes the entirety of California. We don’t need to secede from Mexico or the US; we just need to think about this place in this new (old) way. Please share your thoughts and dreams on this subject if our thesis resonates.
