Welcome to Our Little Corner of the World
We will Explore a very rare and unusual place, the Sierra de la Laguna in Baja California Sur. It is a biosphere preserve with a totally freaky climate and independent flora and fauna from the rest of the planet.
It is an ecological treasure-house where cacti, palms and pine trees grow side by side, and rock pools form underneath towering granite boulders. There are so many amazing things that contribute to this area being so beautiful and unspoiled, but the main one is luck. It was just too remote and not on the way to anywhere to make it attractive to developers or even early settlers. Another special aspect is geology and climate. As the last ice age retreated, the plants and animals all ended up in this little oasis with lush, green trees and stuff. The reason is that the flora and fauna continually escaped the growing heat and lack of water, either heading north and out of the California peninsula, or south to a small area that was so much higher up than the rest of the peninsula that many survived. And in the intervening 10,000 or so years, these species have become so distinct that they are unique. The Sierra la Laguna is therefore a biological island of uniqueness, untouched by development, and even mostly untouched by tourism. And last but not least, it’s two hours from LA and three hours from San Francisco by plane, making it the most remote place you can get to that’s within a few hours from parts of the US.
