Laguna Baja

welcome

Welcome to Our Little Corner of the World

We will Explore a very rare and unusual place, the Sierra de la Laguna in Baja California Sur. It is a biosphere preserve with a totally freaky climate and independent flora and fauna from the rest of the planet.

It is an ecological treasure-house where cacti, palms and pine trees grow side by side, and rock pools form underneath towering granite boulders. There are so many amazing things that contribute to this area being so beautiful and unspoiled, but the main one is luck. It was just too remote and not on the way to anywhere to make it attractive to developers or even early settlers. Another special aspect is geology and climate. As the last ice age retreated, the plants and animals all ended up in this little oasis with lush, green trees and stuff. The reason is that the flora and fauna continually escaped the growing heat and lack of water, either heading north and out of the California peninsula, or south to a small area that was so much higher up than the rest of the peninsula that many survived.  And in the intervening 10,000 or so years, these species have become so distinct that they are unique. The Sierra la Laguna is therefore a biological island of uniqueness, untouched by development, and even mostly untouched by tourism. And last but not least, it’s two hours from LA and three hours from San Francisco by plane, making it the most remote place you can get to that’s within a few hours from parts of the US.

dedication

This website is dedicated to the preservation of the Sierra de la Laguna in all its wondrous glory. We are not affiliated with any organization, but we do offer information about the Sierra that is hard to get elsewhere, as well as tours across the Sierra itself for a select few. Trekking across the Sierra de la Laguna is a magical adventure! No humans have ever lived there! It is the last place of the peninsula that is like what the whole peninsula used to be. It is also a wonderland of continuously flowing springs and pools and rivers with many interesting and unique species. And the sky is ultra clear with more stars than I have ever seen.

The site and all the information in it is free, but if you wish to get help planning a trip or learning more, we require you to sign up and pay a one time, non-refundable ten dollar fee. This entitles you access to a toll free number you can call, or a special email address you can write, to get your questions answered. If you wish to take our tour, it is $100 per person per day, including partial days, including all guides, porters, camping equipment, food and drink (no alcohol), and not including airfare or (for groups of four or less) transportation to the trailhead. For more details on these trips visit the Hikes Across the Sierra section.

ABOUT LAGUNA BAJA

The Sierra down here is an amazing place. It’s a mountain range that essentially is the spine of the west coast of the continent. But the southern tip of the peninsula, including the Sierra de la Laguna, was formerly an island, and it has a distinctive geography and essence, in addition to flora and fauna, that make it a place not like any other. Everything is a little different down here. It’s as if the Earth took a slightly different turn, and while everything feels kind of familiar, it’s all a little not the same.

HIKES ACROSS THE SIERRA

The holy grail of the tip of Baja is a traverse of the Sierra. It is also, in a sense, the focus of this site. Some people who have made the trip compare it to hiking the Himalayas. It is truly magnificent.

THE BIGGER PICTURE – WHAT IS CALIFORNIA?

Some people think California goes from San Diego to Eureka. But it doesn’t . California is twice as long as that. California actually goes from Los Cabos all the way to Eureka, almost two thousand miles. The California peninsula is the longest peninsula in the world. And more important, the consciousness, the notion of place, what it means to be a Californian, that exists the whole way from the tip to the top.

OUR BLOG

I have visited Baja dozens of times, but not so much recently. The last time was January of this year, where I had the good fortune to meet a wonderful guide and scholar, known to me as La Guía, who will be leading your expedition, and the previous time, seven years ago, when I had the amazing luck and providence to meet the leading scholar of the area, Fermin, and the El Jefe of one of the grandest!
